Skunks and Woodchucks/Groundhogs in Wisconsin

Many Skunks carry rabies, which is a serious disease that infects several warmblooded animals. When a Skunk has rabies, it can be easily transmitted to other animals by direct contact, biting. When a Skunk has rabies, it is not uncommon to see them tame, and wandering around in daytime, showing no fear of humans, or they could appear nervous or unusually aggressive. Make sure you never let your animals or children play or be around Skunks. If you are bitten by a Skunk, capture it, if at all possible so it can be tested for rabies. Your local veterinarian office can provide additional information. Skunks are members of the weasel family. Skunks eat both plant and animal materials. Skunks are diggers. This causes problems for those you keep a maintained yard, and for those who have decks/porches, this makes good homes for skunks. Skunks are mainly hated because of the obvious, the smell. Skunks have 2 internal glands, which are at the base of the tail, and it produces a thick oily liquid that contains chemical compounds. Skunks will spray in self defense. Usually a Skunk will give warning before its sprays by stomping its feet. When a Skunk sprays, the fluid can shoot up to 10 to 20 feet. If the fluid gets into your eyes, it will be painful and may cause blindness for moments.
A problem with Skunks, is they have nowhere to go, except under buildings, homes, barns, porches, decks, etc. At Stateline Animal Control Inc. we would dig sown 6 to 8 inches, install 1/4 X 1/4 inch wire mesh and back fill, to prevent any future nuisance animal making a home on your property. We would also disinfect to get rid of the unpleasant smell Skunks leave behind. We would install a one way door, so no matter how many Skunks you have, they will all be excluded. When the  Skunks are gone we would seal the entrance securely. If you are going to do this on your own, make sure all animals are out before you seal up the entrance. Young Skunks may remain in the den from April-August.

The Groundhog/Woodchuck, is one of the 14 species of marmots. They gorge themselves all summer to build reserves of fat. After the first frost, they go to their underground burrow until Spring. Groundhog hibernation gave Americans the custom of "Groundhog Day,: held on the 2nd of February every year. Tradition has it, that if the Groundhog sees it shadow that day, there will be 6 more weeks of winter. When Groundhogs/Woodchucks hibernate they enter a state similar to a coma. Their body temperature drops to just above freezing and their breathing nearly stops. in the Spring, females have a liter of 6. Groundhogs/Woodchucks are the largest members of the squirrel family. Usually seen on the ground, they can climb trees and are great swimmers. Groundhogs/Woodchucks have 4 toes on their front feet and 5 toes on the back feet. They have excellent eyesight and sensitive hearing.
The Groundhog/Woodchuck's diet consists of green plants, grass, and vegetables. Groundhogs/Woodchucks are excellent burrowers, using burrowers for sleeping, taking care of their young, and hibernating. Groundhogs/Woodchucks burrows generally have between 2 and 5 entrances, providing their primary means of escape from predators. Borrows are particularly large, with up to 45 feet of tunnels buried up to 5 feet underground and can become a real nuisance to agricultural and residential development by damaging farm machinery and undermining building foundations.
We get many calls for Groundhogs/Woodchucks, and almost always they have made a burrow under a porch, deck, house, barn, etc. Statelilne Animal Control Inc. would come out and do a complete Inspection of the property. Depending on our findings, we would either set traps or complete a deck exclusion. If the Groundhog/Woodchuck is living under a structure,we are able  to complete a deck exclusion. Since these animals are diggers, we would dig down 8 inches, and install 1/4 X 1/4 inch wire mesh around the structure, and then back fill with either concrete, or dirt, depending on the structure. We would then install a one way door that would exclude these animals out. If the Groundhog/Woodchuck is using your yard as its tunnels to and from its burrow, we would set traps at the end/front of the tunnels. After Groundhog/Woodchucks are gone, it is recommended that you have the wholes filled in as best as possible.
