 Raccoons and Beaver in Wisconsin

It's that time again, where raccoons will be looking for shelter in our homes to breed and stay warm for the winter months. Not only do you have to worry about a raccoon taking up residency in your home, you also have to worry about all the damage that is being done. Raccoons once in your attic will destroy and contaminate all of your insulation, chew on wires and woodwork, cause roofs to leak, and create many sleepless nights as they are nocturnal. Let us handle all of the destruction and removal safely.

Many of our calls this time of year consist of raccoons in the chimney's/fireplace. Specifically mother raccoons are looking for somewhere warm to live and to have their babies. It is very dangerous for several reasons. You could not know they were living in there and start a fire and potentially burn the raccoons. Also, they can get through the screen and potentially gain access into your home. When we get calls we first safely remove the raccoons from the chimney, we then install a chimney cap. If you have a chimney you MUST have a chimney cap. This will eliminate a animal(s) ever being able to gain access.

The raccoon is an omnivorous, Native American mammal, known as the "masked bandit", because of the unique coloring, and because they are very mischievous. Raccoons use their front paws to feel for food. It is a myth that baby raccoons wash their food before eating it. Baby raccoons are referred to as kits or cubs, who are lightly furred and grayish brown. Baby raccoons are less than 6 inches long. Many raccoons will make a den in chimneys, attics, sheds, and under porches. Baby raccoons make a high pitched chattering sound, you would know if you had a  baby raccoon in your house. At 7 weeks, baby raccoons can walk, climb, and play. This becomes a  problem, particularly if you have them living in your attic. They are able to roam free around your attic, damaging insulation, falling into the wall cavities, and potentially left there to die and rot. With Stateline Animal Control Inc. We would come and exclude the mother raccoon and her baby raccoons out of your attic, chimney, porch, deck, etc. If an exclsion is not able to be performed, we would then set traps to catch the Raccoons. Our company offers attic clean outs. After the raccoons are removed, we would come and remove all the urine and fecal matter left behind, disinfect, and then blow in new insulation, to the required R Value. We also install chimney caps, to prevent any other nuisance animal to make a home in your fireplace. Remember,  raccoons are wild animals and do not make good pets. They are vicious and are capable of scratching and biting, and they carry many diseases including rabies.

A Beavers average life span is 24 years and they can grow up to 60 pounds. Beavers transform less suitable habitats by building dams. Gnawing trees with their strong jaws, they create massive log, branch, and mud structures to block streams and turn fields and forests into large ponds. Beavers are among the largest of rodents. They are herbivores and eat leaves, bark, twigs, and roots. They waddle on land and are graceful in the water. They use their webbed rear feet like swimming fins, and their paddle-shaped tails like rudders, this allows the Beaver to swim up to 5 MPH. Beavers can stay under water for 15 minutes, and they have a set of transparent eyelids that function as goggles. Their fur is naturally oily and waterproof. Beavers are even active all winter, even when a layer of ice covers the surface.
When Beavers build their dams and change river flows, they are changing the world more than any other creature, besides man. The Beavers use dams as protection form predators, and as shelter in the winter. If a predator destroys part of the dam, it will be fixed overnight. Also like men, they won't stop building until the job is complete. Beavers are notoriously destructive. They cause $100 million in property damage yearly, and their re-working of river currents can cause massive floods on our nations farms. They have been know to destroy whole forests.
We get several calls a year from clients, who live on a stream or private lake/pond, that have Beavers destroying their property. Stateline Animal Control Inc. would come out and complete an Inspection of the entire property. After the Inspection, we would determine were the Beaver paths of movement are, and set a trap in the path, assuring that the Beaver will swim right into it.
