     BATS IN WISCONSIN

Bats are predators of night flying insects. As much as many people don't care for bats, they play a major role in maintaining the balance in nature. One brown bat can catch 1200 mosquito sized insects in an hour. It is not un-common for a bat to accidentally fly into your house or garage. If such a thing should occur, open your doors and windows, to allow the bat to fly out. If that does not work, wait until it lands, and then cover it with a small box, and then release it outside. Bats will roost in attics, chimneys, eaves, under siding, soffits, roof tiles, shingles, or behind shutters. A bat can enter through an opening as small as one half inch in diameter. Bats can be detected by the presence of black stains from body oils or bat droppings. If it is detected that you have a bat colony roosting in your attic, have a wildlife technician fix the problem for you, and have all the bat guano cleaned up and disinfected. Stateline Animal Control Inc. would exclude the bats by either netting or tubes. The tubes function as one way valves, they must be placed over the openings for the bats to enter/exit. These exclusion devices should generally stay up for 5 to 7 days, to ensure all bats have exited. You can not exclude bats when they are young, for they wont fly out. The maternity season begins the end of May in Wisconsin. Young bats are flying and exclusions can resume by late August. Exclusions are the only effective solution for permanently removing bats. Trapping and relocating is ineffective since bats have excellent homing instincts and return home, even when released great distances away. Bats are carriers of rabies, so you should always leave any type of nuisance animal problem to the professionals.

*AS MUCH AS MANY PEOPLE DO NOT CARE FOR BATS, THEY PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN MAINTAINING THE BALANCE OF NATURE. AN AVERAGE BAT WILL EAT 1200 MOSQUITO SIZED INSECTS AN HOUR. MANY HOME OWNERS APPRECIATE THAT, AND DON'T NECESSARILY WANT THE BATS GONE, THEY JUST DON'T WANT THEM IN THEIR HOMES!  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A BAT HOUSE TO RE-HOME THE BATS CLICK BELOW!*

WALWORTH COUNTY WI BATS: We went to a clients house in Lake Geneva WI, which is near Fontana, Williams Bay, and Delavan, WI  who claimed she had bats. After we arrived and completed our Inspection we realized she had a serious Bat colony roosting in her attic with about 200 bats. We had recommended to her that she have all the Bats excluded, and after that she have the insulation in her attic replaced.  There were black streaks all over her siding, evidence for us that we found the entry/exit point that the bats were using, Another big clue was all the bat droppings that were on the ground. We installed 2 bat tubes over the entry/exit points, this allows the bats to leave and they are "locked out." This is what we call an exclusion. You are unable to complete bat exclusions from May til August, because they have babies, and the babies are to small to be able to fly out. If a bat exclusion was preformed in those months,  after you get the adults out, you would have dead baby bats left. After we installed the tubes, we went and filled every crack and crevice with caulk, spray foam, weather stripping, and trim coil. We always leave any type of exclusion device up for at least 2 weeks. You never want to prematurely take down an exclusion device and seal up the hole, for you don't want to seal any bats in. Once all the bats are excluded, we will go back and complete an attic restoration. We remove all the damaged insulation due to the bats defecating and urinating all over your insulation. After we remove all the damaged insulation and clean up all the bat feces, we go through and disinfect the entire area. The last step is to blow in new insulation to the required R Value.

KENOSHA COUNTY WI BATS: Had a customer call me from Kenosha County, which consists of  the following cities: Bassett, Bristol, Camp Lake, Kenosha, New Munster, Paddock Lake, Pleasant Prairie, Powers Lake, Salem, Slades Corners, Somers, Trevor,Twin Lakes, Wheatland, and Wilmot, just to name a few. She said she heard screeching noises at night that was keeping her up, and she assumed it was a raccoons. We arrived at her residence and after completing our Inspection, we had concluded that it was bats.  She had a colony of bats living under her siding, next to her chimney. She had beautiful cedar wood siding. We had to pull away 3 boards, and the bats started flying away. After pulling the siding down, the entry/exit point was detected, we installed a bat tube over the whole. We will return in about a week and remove the exclusion device and seal up the hole.

RACINE COUNTY WI BATS:
With so many towns like Browns Lake, Burlington, Caledonia, Crestview, Elmwood Park, Mount Pleasent, North Bay, Racine, Rochester, Sturtevant, Union Grove, Waterford, and Wind Point that make up Racine County, it is no wonder that we receive so many phone calls about Bats, there is no where for them to roost except in your structures at home.(chimney, attic, under siding, etc.) Racine County is situated near Lake Michigan. In 2008 Racine, WI had a population of 82,196 which made it the 5th largest city in Wisconsin. The more we build, the less space any of our wildlife has to live, we are forcing them into our homes. If you have a bat problem, leave it to the professionals who are Licensed and trained to deal with these mammals on a daily basis. If you are not careful, you may get bit, and many bats carry rabies.
